Have you ever thought critically about how the concept of self care may be keeping us culturally stuck in oppressive, patriarchal ways of being?
In our Instagram live yesterday, Penpa and I spoke about our nervous systems and awareness but we also discussed how a lot of what is being sold as self development and sacred spirituality just feeds the current system rather than offering true liberation.
Self care without community care is not authentic care. Under capitalist, colonial systems that encourage individualism, the concept of self-care only contributes to our current problems. Unless community is centered, self care is incomplete.
Now, take a moment to notice what’s happening in your body and mind right now. Be with whatever is there and then please read what I have to share.
Community care includes self care because individuals ARE the community. If the whole is cared for the individual will be too. There is no sacrifice of the self required to care for the community. Every being is already included in the overall equation.
By design, the self care we promote and practice in our culture doesn’t include the community. The self-help and self-care industry are booming, billion dollar industries that focuses on the individual without addressing the reality of the culture and society people live within. As a result, we are conditioned to believe that the answer to all of our problems will be solved if we just throw enough bath salts, affirmations, acupuncture, massage, therapy, love, light, thoughts and prayers at them.
I’m not bagging on the things we do to survive our society. I love my bath tub & to soothe myself with the things I mentioned above. I’m all about healthy boundaries and think it’s great that “quiet quitting” and rest have become acts of resistance.
People shouldn’t be doing more than they are paid for at work and our stressed out nervous systems are desperate for the healing that comes with rest. But as you can see if you look around, if we don’t consciously center community in our equation, we have a bunch of self-centered people taking a time out and not putting their new found energy into creating a world we don’t need to recover from.
Do you see how centering community care becomes our Sacred Responsibility?
It’s no secret that our world is a dumpster fire with cans of gasoline scattered about🔥 🔥🔥
Once you see it you just can’t unsee it; right?
This is why Penpa and I created Sacred Responsibility, a 3 month deep dive circle to help you claim what’s yours to carry while you cultivate sovereignty & the ability to respond to our collective crisis.
We will practice:
🔥Courageous conversations
🔥Better boundaries
🔥Challenging co-dependent power imbalances
🔥Taking responsibility in relationship
🔥Deconstructing and divesting from harmful cultural worldviews
3 month Circle Starts March 19th-May 21st 2023
Days/TImes: Sundays 10am-11:30am HST, 12pm PT, 1pm MT, 2pm CT, 3pm ET
